Rosetta Stone Awards “Communicate and Connect Scholarship” to Former ESL Student |
Arlington, VA (January 11, 2011) Rosetta Stone Inc. (NYSE:RST), a leading provider of technology-based language-learning solutions, announced today the recipient of the Rosetta Stone® Communicate and Connect Scholarship for graduating English as a Second Language (ESL) high school seniors. The winner, Velina Zabtcheva, now attends Bennington College, a liberal arts college located in Bennington, Vermont, and is studying psychology and cultural studies. Participants in the scholarship contest were asked to describe “how learning English impacted your life” for their essay submission. The judging panel, made up of former educators, reviewed more than 700 essays and selected Velina’s entry, and awarded her a cash award of $3,000 to be used towards her college education. Velina’s story is especially compelling as she did not speak English when her family first moved from Sofia, Bulgaria, to the United States when she was age twelve. Velina first enrolled in a half-day ESL program in the sixth grade and by the beginning of her eighth grade year, tested out of the ESL program completely. With a newfound proficiency in the language, she excelled in school and went on to graduate from Montclair High School in Montclair, New Jersey in 2009. The judging panel included former educator and Rosetta Stone director of learning Duane Sider: Now fluent in English, Velina is a native Bulgarian speaker and is currently learning French with Rosetta Stone. Velina’s studies will take her to France for two months this winter and in conjunction she will blog about her experience learning the language at Language Journeys: A Customer Perspective. Rosetta Stone® Classroom is a powerful learning tool that blends seamlessly into a teacher’s overall language-learning curriculum. The immersive solution helps school districts integrate non-English speaking students into their education system and drive overall achievement. Rosetta Stone Classroom affords teachers the opportunity to entrust critical language skill development to the software so that invaluable classroom time can be focused on topic-based activities that bring language learning to life.
